I bought assassin's creed 2 for mac yesterday, so it's a native version i guess because there's no cider wrapper in it. It's not playable, horrible performance (Mac Pro 4,1 - 6 gig ram, nvidia gtx 285), no logitech controller support. Btw my keyboard doesn't work in assassin's creed 2, am I the only one with that kind of problems? It reminds me of Black and White 2 native version, that one sucks too. Why didn't they stay with cider?
Prince of persia runs flawlessly on my mac pro, I'm so angry aaaah. Welcome to the club AC2:P Is there a chance that the Mac port uses the same compatibility layer as Valves Source engine that translates DirectX API calls to OpenGL on the fly? The performance/optimization of many recently released 'native' Mac games is getting worse overall. I recall it starting with CMR Mac (which got delayed almost 2 years and was not playable on my modded G4 system with 256 MB video card in 1024x768 res) but the PC version ran just fine on my MacMini with GMA card.) dunno but the contents folder looks like star wars the force unleashed mac version (data folder). Btw star wars runs amazingly fast on my mac pro in full resolution i tried 3 different keyboards, not working at all, i can't even walk in assassin's creed, only camera move with my magic mouse works haha.
I get fantastic performance with every setting maxed out. As elendryst said, the only time i ever get lag is when I'm near the border of the city and the border is blocked off by the white force field thingy. I have same macbook pro like you: MacBook Pro 17' (Mid 2010) Intel Core i5 M 540 2.53GHz (turbo to 3.066GHz) 2 Cores (4 Threads) - 4GB DDR3 RAM NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB And its run terrible on lowest settings! Doy you have some graphic card upgrade? Or some different upgrade? Thx for answer.
It used to run terrible for me too, but after a couple missions it seemed to get better. Also, playing it right after a fresh reboot of Mac helps the performance so much. This game uses a lot of resources so that's probably why. So try that first. Restart your Mac, then straight away play AC2 and you should see really good performance. I should of said almost above.
My exact settings are everything maxed, except MSAA @ 2 and Res 1280x800. I could probably put the Res or MSAA a little higher but i haven't experimented much. Works good on my 27 inch iMac late 2009 model and unlike any cider port or even most other native ports it supports true 5.1 channel surround sound if you can setup that many channels in audio MIDI setup. That can be done either with external sound cards or a mini displayport to HDMI adaptor on late 2009 model or later iMacs, Macbooks or Mac Minis.
Pretty much any model that has a mini displayport can output up to 7.1 channels over MDP to HDMI. The only other game that supports that properly is the recent Borderlands port by Feral.

I realize that Assassin's Creed 2 doesn't support controllers in the Mac version (I have the MacGameStore version). But has anyone had any luck using a key-mapping app like Gamepad Companion with it? With a PS3 Bluetooth controller specifically? I've had great luck with several other games: Portal 1 & 2, Rage, SW: Force Unleashed, etc. But no matter what I try, I can't get it to work with this one. The developer for Gamepad Companion hasn't answered one of my support emails in at least 2 years (although the app still occasionally gets updated), so he's useless. Well, no need to get into that, presumably.
So, if anyone has any tips, I'd be all ears! The problem in my opinion for emulating keyboard and mouse with a gamepad is it doesn't give you precisely what makes those games work better with a controller. Analog movement and turning. This is because WASD is inherently digital and it stays digital when mapped to a thumbstick. For me it's native controller support or just use keyboard and mouse.
Not to mention if a game supports the analog shoulder buttons for stuff like driving. This too is impossible via keyboard emulation. Not to mention rumble. Here I don't use keyboard emulation for ANY game.
Feral gets a thumbs up for supporting all that and a wide array of controllers. Aspyr typically supports less (less than a handful of models) and the few Ubisoft games they ported themselves support none. Using keyboard emulation on every single title is a waste in my opinion. Particularly if it's a Feral game. On the other hand at least most of the games I've played from Aspyr I wouldn't want to play with a gamepad anyway like FPS games. I still prefer to play those with keyboard and mouse. The games I tend to play from Feral I also tend to want to play with gamepads (no not the strategy games, I'm not a strategy gamer).
Slower and faster? I'm sorry to hear such good news? I actually completed both released Assassin's Creed games on Mac with keyboard and mouse. And honestly like I said. With 'keymapping' you'd still get digital movement and turning anyway. Those are specifically the reasons why one would want to use a controller with Assassin's Creed analog movement and turning! I don't know. To me it sounds an awful lot like a non-solution that doesn't give one what they where looking for. I just hope if and when we ever get another Assassin's Creed game that either Feral ports it or they actually bother with proper native controller support.
OH, I almost forgot. With proper native support you also get the proper button prompts on screen instead of it telling you to hit a key which then you have to remember which button you mapped it to. Awesome, thanks! Although unless you have some kind of cyber-psychic link with your computer and gamepad (what a blessing/curse that would be), or wicked config file hacking skills, I am not sure you will have much luck without a keymapping app (although maybe you meant you had one too). I am starting to regret not getting AC2 during a Steam sale instead, so I could run it under BootCamp, and probably have better luck with my controller and MotionInJoy.
Boy, I wish they would port THAT to the Mac OS. But I have enough Windows-only games on that partition, and I did catch AC2 on sale at MGS. I do prefer to buy Mac/non-Steam versions whenever it's financially viable. Anyway, thanks again, and please let us all know what you find out, when you get a chance. Well, if either can help me out, I will spread his Good Word around the cybersphere. (Seriously, many people have been whining about the same problem.) So I installed Assassin's Creed II on my MacBook Pro, got my DualShock 4 hooked up to it.

I don't have Gamepad Companion, but I do have a demo version of ControllerMate. So I spent about 45 minutes learning how to configure it (never actually used it before), then got it set up so WASD is assigned to the left stick, and mouse control to the right stick and triggers. Made sure it was working by opening TextEdit, and sure enough typed out various strings of wasd by moving the left stick randomly. Moved the mouse around the Finder some and clicked and dragged things with the right stick and triggers. Then I went to go test it out in AC2 and see what happens.
